SIDE EFFECTS OF ROSIGLITAZONE

Rosiglitazone is a special type of antidiabetic medicine known as a thiazolidinedione or glitazone. Rosiglitazone helps to lower blood sugar levels by increasing the sensitivity of fat, liver and muscle cells to insulin. This enables cells to remove sugar from the blood more effectively. Rosiglitazone preserves the functioning of the cells in the pancreas (beta cells) that produce insulin. The effect of this medicine is therefore to help the body control blood sugar levels and prevent them becoming too high. Avandia tablets contain the active ingredient rosiglitazone maleate, which is an antidiabetic medicine used for treating people with type 2 or non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM).

The following are some of the side effects of Rosiglitazone that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because many side effects are stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect. Low blood glucose level, Pain in the muscles, Pins and needles (paraesthesia), Difficulty in breathing, Heart failure, Excessive fluid retention in the body tissues, resulting in swelling, Constipation, Low red blood cell count, Increase in the level of fats, eg cholesterol in the blood, Headache, Weight gain, Increased appetite, Fatigue, Dizziness, Decrease in the number of platelets in the blood (thrombocytopenia),

DOSAGE OF ROSIGLITAZONE

For adults: At first, the dose is 4 milligrams (mg) for one day or 2 mg two times a day. After 8 to 12 weeks, the dose may be increased to 8 mg per day or 4 mg two times a day
For children it is not suggested to be used.
